Rethinking the role of the DCS controller

Traditionally the controller in a Distributed Control System was seen as the heart of a control system, where its powerful algorithms justified its use on sophisticated processes. That role is still valid, but the drive toward Plant Digitalisation, IIoT and modern project execution models means controllers should have a wider functionality.
